We sit down with parents, kids, and teens, explain everything in detail, and offer expert medical advice.
Our pediatric and adolescent primary care services include:
Newborn care
From Day 1, we give parents the skills, knowledge, and testing they need to help their newborns thrive. Our providers perform well-baby checkups to monitor infants’ growth, development, and overall health. We offer a complete array of screenings, including heel blood tests to rule out rare diseases, and tests that check infants for congenital heart disease and hearing loss. You can also trust our medical experts for help with common newborn illnesses, such as colic, diaper rash, and jaundice.
Need support with breastfeeding? Our providers will stand by your side, providing helpful hints on positioning and latch techniques. We’ll also teach you best practices to protect your newborn, including tips for childproofing your home, safe sleeping, and car seat safety. From recommending effective bathing and soothing techniques to providing mental health support, our team will put you and your child first.
Neonatal circumcision
One of the first choices parents of infant boys need to make is whether to circumcise. At Ironwood Family Practice, we’ll give you all the information you need to make the most informed decision possible. Our team will explain the procedure so you understand all potential benefits and risks. We also perform circumcisions in our office within a sterile and private environment. We’ll give you detailed instructions on how to keep the circumcision site clean post-procedure and will perform follow-up care to address any questions or concerns.
Medical ear piercing
In North Idaho, children of any age may get their ears pierced with parental consent. If your child or teen is ready for an ear piercing, you can get it done in a clean, safe environment at Ironwood Family practice. During a medical ear piercing in our office, we use sterile needles to minimize any risks and complications. Plus, we’ll give you and your child full instructions on how to care for piercing, including cleaning of the site, pain management, and signs of infection. Our team can also help you know which activities (such as swimming) your child or teen should avoid immediately after piercing.
Well-child exams
Regular checkups help you track your child’s growth and wellbeing. Regular well-infant exams and well-toddler exams should take place at between 1-2 weeks, then at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, and 30 months. These visits are important, allowing us to check your infant’s height, weight, and head circumference to ensure they’re meeting their developmental milestones. At age 3, kids and teens should have annual well-child exams. During these visits, we’ll perform a physical exam, check your child’s vital signs, and discuss any questions you might have. We can also share wellness tips about nutrition, healthy eating, and injury prevention during these checkups.
Immunizations and vaccinations
By keeping up on your child’s vaccines, you can help them prevent numerous diseases. Pediatric and adolescent primary care providers in CDA can manage your child’s immunization schedule and keep them up to date so they’re fully protected. Recommended vaccinations include:
- Infants and toddlers: Diphtheria, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), tetanus and pertussis (DTap), hepatitis B, Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b), polio, pneumococcal, and rotavirus. Annual Influenza vaccine is recommended when a child is 6 months and older.
- School-age children: MMR booster, Tdap booster, meningococcal, human papillomavirus (HPV), and influenza.
At each visit, we’ll do everything possible to make immunizations comfortable for your child. Our providers will also educate you on vaccines, address any concerns, and maintain an immunization record. Miss a vaccine? No worries. Our providers can help get your child or teen back on track.
Sports physicals
Whether your child or teen is getting ready for football, soccer, basketball, swimming, cheerleading, gymnastics, or tumbling, we can give them a healthy head start. Ironwood Family Practice offers pre-participation sports physicals. Many of our providers specialize in sports medicine, allowing them to expertly evaluate your child and determine their ability to take part in sports. During a sports physical, we’ll perform a physical examination, identify any medical conditions that could pose risks during sports activity, and review any special considerations, such as sport-specific skills. We’ll also work with parents and young athletes to complete medical clearance forms, and we’ll offer injury prevention tips to keep youngsters safe in their chosen sport.
Camp physicals
One of the best parts of raising a family in Coeur d’Alene is having access to a variety of camps for kids and teens. From overnight camps and equestrian camps to ski camp and wilderness camps, parents and their kids have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, spend time with their friends, and have fun. If your child needs a pre-camp physical, we can help. Similar to a sports physical, a camp physical ensures that your child is ready for whatever activities they may engage in while they’re at camp. We’ll evaluate your child’s fitness, complete medical clearance forms, and answer all of your questions so you can send your kid to camp confidently.
